And now for something completely different

Well, after almost seven years at Fotango - I have decided it is time to look for a new challenge. I've had a wonderful time at Fotango, the team has been outstanding and a real pleasure to work for.

I'm intending to finish my employment in October, which will give enough time to manage a handover.

After that? Well I've a few ideas .... I'll see what happens.

My one regret, is that we didn't get to open source Zimki and instead we have had this period of uncertainty over the month or so. I'm still hopeful that Zimki will be open sourced, it is in my view the right thing to do and there is a huge potential for new business.

This is my first OSCON, and overall it has been excellent ... interesting talks and a good chance to meet up with friends again.

Despite my usual nerves, the keynote went quite well ... I can now afford to take some time to relax.

Your presentation at OSCON was fantastic! I look forward to hearing all about the next chapter in your life. Viva Ducks! --ollie

I saw the post in The Register via a google alert. Best of luck to you, and I hope you turn up somewhere that'll let us continue to spar over standards for utility computing. It's a conversation that needs folks like you involved.

Hey Simon, I saw the piece in The Register as well -- and all I have to say, after seeing your ducks at FOWA and meeting you -- good on ya! Fotango will definitely miss you -- but I can tell you, there are *lots* of folks out there who would love to have you!

Hi Simon,

I also saw your presentation at FOWA, and I think I've seen you before, perhaps at an AOP or PPA event? Thoroughly enjoyed it, and we spoke briefly at FOWA.

I just wanted to wish you the best of luck with whatever your next venture is. I commend your decision to leave Fotango. Without being open source, Zwiki will probably be doomed.

I'm sorry to hear Zimki isn't getting open sourced anytime soon.. I was really looking forward to it =)

Taking the step to realize your ideas is a hard one but well worth it in the end even if it fails. I thought about it for nearly four years and just recently took it myself. Lots of blood, sweat and code but nothing beats the satisfaction of creating something new and innovative.

All the best,
Claes J.

Thank you for the comments, and Bert yes I'll happily continue to spar on the need for standards.

Having publicly stated our commitment to the open source route back at EuroOscon in 2006, I could hardly continue in either good conscience or with my integrity intact with such a change.

So after much soul searching, I decided to leave Fotango. I didn't expect that my comment at the end of my keynote :-

"this was my last talk for Fotango, I have had seven wonderful years there. I do hope they get Zimki open sourced soon"

- to cause quite such a stir.

You can see the full speech at:-

Sorry to hear things haven't worked out. I found our last meeting very productive. Hopefully we'll bump into each other in London soon.
